What I found was a great example of how to build an effective church plant setup while being mindful of budget constraints. In this article, I&#8217;ll walk you through their setup, offering insights and recommendations based on my experience.<\/p><h2 class=\"text-xl font-bold text-text-200 mt-1 -mb-0.5\">Front of House Setup<\/h2><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">The heart of Orbit Church&#8217;s audio system is the Allen &amp; Heath SQ5 digital mixer, a powerful and compact console that continues to be a solid choice for growing churches. They&#8217;ve paired this with a 20U Odyssey rack, which, while functional, has significant unused space. One immediate observation: empty rack space is an opportunity. Whether it&#8217;s for equipment, blank panels, or storage drawers, maximizing rack space can improve organization and efficiency.<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">Their current cable management includes running separate XLR cables for speakers and an S-link cable for the stage box. While functional, I&#8217;d recommend:<\/p><ul class=\"[&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc space-y-1.5 pl-7\"><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Utilizing the stage box outputs for speakers instead of running separate XLR cables<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Implementing a more streamlined cabling approach using multi-pair cables<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Consider products like Whirlwind&#8217;s combined data\/audio cables for cleaner runs<\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"text-lg font-bold text-text-200 mt-1 -mb-1.5\">Audio Network Recommendations<\/h3><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">One significant upgrade I&#8217;d recommend is implementing Dante audio networking. The SQ5 has a slot for a Dante card, which would eliminate the need for:<\/p><ul class=\"[&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc space-y-1.5 pl-7\"><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">USB audio connections<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Multiple analog audio runs<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">The current Scarlett interface setup<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">While Dante does represent an investment, it simplifies the system and provides more flexibility for future expansion.<\/p><h2 class=\"text-xl font-bold text-text-200 mt-1 -mb-0.5\">Stage Setup<\/h2><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">The stage rack is well-organized, featuring:<\/p><ul class=\"[&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc space-y-1.5 pl-7\"><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Sennheiser EWD digital wireless microphones (4 vocals + dual handheld\/lavalier for pastor)<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Sennheiser XSW in-ear monitor system<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">RF Venue antenna distribution<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">A note on their wireless systems: while the EWD microphones are excellent, I&#8217;ve found the XSW in-ear monitors can be problematic, especially when using more than four units. While they&#8217;ve experienced some latency issues, I suspect this might be related to the controller rather than Sunday Keys itself. I&#8217;ve had great experiences using Sunday Keys with Studio Logic controllers.<\/p><h3 class=\"text-lg font-bold text-text-200 mt-1 -mb-1.5\">Drums<\/h3><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">They&#8217;re running an acoustic Gretsch Catalina kit with K Custom dry series cymbals. While it works for their skilled drummers, in a portable church environment, I&#8217;d typically recommend an electronic kit for:<\/p><ul class=\"[&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc space-y-1.5 pl-7\"><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Easier volume control<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Consistent sound<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Simpler setup\/teardown<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Better stage volume management<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"text-xl font-bold text-text-200 mt-1 -mb-0.5\">Lighting System<\/h2><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">Their lighting setup includes:<\/p><ul class=\"[&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc space-y-1.5 pl-7\"><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">4 OSRAM strobe lights<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">2 Chauvet beam lights (75W)<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">3 JWS web lights<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">MLA 400W zoom lights for face lighting<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">They&#8217;ve made a smart choice using more budget-friendly fixtures for their portable setup. As Karezz mentioned, gear inevitably takes some abuse in a portable church environment, so having replaceable components makes sense.<\/p><h2 class=\"text-xl font-bold text-text-200 mt-1 -mb-0.5\">Video System<\/h2><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">The video system is built around:<\/p><ul class=\"[&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc space-y-1.5 pl-7\"><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro (main)<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Two Pocket 6K G2 cameras (secondary)<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">ATEM Mini Constellation HD switcher<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Custom SDI patch bay for easier setup<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">One immediate improvement I&#8217;d suggest is consolidating their video rack setup. Using a KVM switch and proper rack mounting could significantly streamline their setup\/teardown process.<\/p><h2 class=\"text-xl font-bold text-text-200 mt-1 -mb-0.5\">Network Infrastructure Recommendations<\/h2><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">The biggest opportunity for improvement I see is in their network infrastructure. I&#8217;d recommend:<\/p><ol class=\"[&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-decimal space-y-1.5 pl-7\"><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Implementing a UniFi Dream Machine Pro as the core router<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Adding UniFi Pro switches (24-port for video world, 8-port for FOH and stage)<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Using Dante for audio distribution<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Implementing proper rack panels with RJ45 connections for clean trunk lines<\/li><\/ol><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">This would reduce their cable runs between FOH and stage to essentially:<\/p><ul class=\"[&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc space-y-1.5 pl-7\"><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">One network cable<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">One video cable<\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"text-xl font-bold text-text-200 mt-1 -mb-0.5\">LED Wall Setup<\/h2><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">They&#8217;re running a Chinese-manufactured LED wall in a 4&#215;5 configuration, soon to be changed to 3&#215;6. While not a premium product, it serves their needs well. The current ground support system could be improved, and their planned transition to truss mounting should help with both setup time and stability.<\/p><h2 class=\"text-xl font-bold text-text-200 mt-1 -mb-0.5\">Final Thoughts<\/h2><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">What impresses me most about Orbit Church&#8217;s setup is how they&#8217;ve balanced functionality with budget constraints. While there are areas for improvement, they&#8217;ve built a system that serves their congregation well and can grow with them.<\/p><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\">For church plants looking to build their own technical systems, remember:<\/p><ul class=\"[&amp;:not(:last-child)_ul]:pb-1 [&amp;:not(:last-child)_ol]:pb-1 list-disc space-y-1.5 pl-7\"><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Start with core fundamentals (reliable audio and clear face lighting)<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Build systems that volunteers can easily operate<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Consider setup\/teardown time in every equipment decision<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Plan for growth but buy for current needs<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Invest in quality where it matters most (audio console, main cameras)<\/li><li class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Don&#8217;t be afraid to use budget-friendly options for items that might take abuse<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words\"><br \/>Remember, the goal is to support ministry, not to have the fanciest gear.
