In this post, I\u2019ll show you how I achieve a clean, engaging livestream mix using a <strong data-start=\"539\" data-end=\"557\">single console<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"562\" data-end=\"581\">just one person<\/strong>mixing both front of house and the stream.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"626\" data-end=\"783\">And the best part? It\u2019s fully repeatable and doesn\u2019t require a separate DAW, engineer, or broadcast mix station. You can make this happen in your church too.<\/p><hr class=\"\" data-start=\"785\" data-end=\"788\" \/><h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"790\" data-end=\"831\">The Foundation: Your Room Comes First<\/h3><p class=\"\" data-start=\"833\" data-end=\"1017\">Before we talk faders and effects, we have to talk about the <strong data-start=\"894\" data-end=\"902\">room<\/strong>. Your online mix is only as good as your in-person mix\u2014and your in-person mix is only as good as your room allows.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1019\" data-end=\"1044\">Here\u2019s what I prioritize:<\/p><ol data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1505\"><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1233\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1049\" data-end=\"1233\"><strong data-start=\"1049\" data-end=\"1074\">Minimize stage volume<\/strong>: If you&#8217;re still relying on loud amps or acoustic drums in a small room, it\u2019s time to rethink. We use <strong data-start=\"1177\" data-end=\"1197\">electronic drums<\/strong> to keep stage volume under control.<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1234\" data-end=\"1411\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1237\" data-end=\"1411\"><strong data-start=\"1237\" data-end=\"1256\">Treat the space<\/strong>: We\u2019ve treated our room acoustically to cut down on harsh reflections and reverb. A square drywall box with nothing on the walls is a nightmare to mix in.<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1412\" data-end=\"1505\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1505\"><strong data-start=\"1415\" data-end=\"1430\">Tune the PA<\/strong>: This is essential. Even great gear sounds bad if it\u2019s not tuned properly.<\/p><\/li><\/ol><hr class=\"\" data-start=\"1507\" data-end=\"1510\" \/><h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1512\" data-end=\"1543\">The Secret Sauce: Room Mics<\/h3><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1545\" data-end=\"1654\">Once your room is in shape, <strong data-start=\"1573\" data-end=\"1586\">room mics<\/strong> are your best friend for livestreaming. I use <strong data-start=\"1633\" data-end=\"1653\">two stereo pairs<\/strong>:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1807\"><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1736\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1658\" data-end=\"1736\">One pair above the congregation, behind the mains (to avoid direct PA pickup).<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"1737\" data-end=\"1807\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1739\" data-end=\"1807\">Another pair over front of house that intentionally picks up the PA.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"\" data-start=\"1809\" data-end=\"2004\">I personally <strong data-start=\"1822\" data-end=\"1836\">time-align<\/strong> these mics to my main mix in Waves LV1, though that\u2019s an optional advanced move. Some engineers leave the natural delay for a bit of ambient smear, and that works too.<\/p><hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2006\" data-end=\"2009\" \/><h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2011\" data-end=\"2045\">Step-by-Step: Building the Mix<\/h3><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2047\" data-end=\"2163\">With my virtual soundcheck recording (captured during band rehearsal via Logic), I start building the mix like this:<\/p><h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"2165\" data-end=\"2193\">1. <strong data-start=\"2173\" data-end=\"2193\">Start with Drums<\/strong><\/h4><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2194\" data-end=\"2331\">I push up the kick and snare first. These are electronic drums routed into LV1, so we\u2019re already starting with clean, consistent samples.<\/p><h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"2333\" data-end=\"2357\">2. <strong data-start=\"2341\" data-end=\"2357\">Add the Bass<\/strong><\/h4><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2358\" data-end=\"2461\">This locks in the low end. I tweak levels so it glues to the kick nicely but doesn\u2019t overpower the mix.<\/p><h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"2463\" data-end=\"2499\">3. <strong data-start=\"2471\" data-end=\"2499\">Introduce the Lead Vocal<\/strong><\/h4><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2500\" data-end=\"2585\">This is the anchor of the mix. I want it sitting just right on top of the foundation.<\/p><h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"2587\" data-end=\"2625\">4. <strong data-start=\"2595\" data-end=\"2625\">Blend in Background Vocals<\/strong><\/h4><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2626\" data-end=\"2819\">I balance BGVs underneath the lead. I\u2019ll often send <strong data-start=\"2678\" data-end=\"2705\">more reverb to the BGVs<\/strong> to push them back in the mix a little further. This helps separate them and keep the lead vocal front and center.<\/p><h4 class=\"\" data-start=\"2821\" data-end=\"2864\">5. <strong data-start=\"2829\" data-end=\"2864\">Layer in Tracks and Choir Stems<\/strong><\/h4><p class=\"\" data-start=\"2865\" data-end=\"3082\">I send all my stems into a stereo tracks channel, but I break out <strong data-start=\"2931\" data-end=\"2953\">choir\/extra vocals<\/strong> into their own channel. When mixed just right, these help the online mix feel congregational and full without being overbearing.<\/p><hr class=\"\" data-start=\"3084\" data-end=\"3087\" \/><h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"3089\" data-end=\"3118\">The Game-Changer: Effects<\/h3><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3120\" data-end=\"3277\">Here\u2019s where many churches fall short: <strong data-start=\"3159\" data-end=\"3179\">reverb and delay<\/strong>. Your livestream mix needs more of it\u2014especially if people are listening on phones or headphones.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3279\" data-end=\"3387\">A dry mix on a phone sounds harsh and small. Reverb smooths the edges and adds realism. I\u2019ll typically send:<\/p><ul data-start=\"3389\" data-end=\"3530\"><li class=\"\" data-start=\"3389\" data-end=\"3427\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3391\" data-end=\"3427\">Lead vocals to a more focused reverb<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"3428\" data-end=\"3480\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3430\" data-end=\"3480\">Background vocals to a wetter, more ambient reverb<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"3481\" data-end=\"3530\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3483\" data-end=\"3530\">Instruments to their own subtle space as needed<\/p><\/li><\/ul><hr class=\"\" data-start=\"3532\" data-end=\"3535\" \/><h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"3537\" data-end=\"3572\">Going Beyond the Left\/Right Mix<\/h3><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3574\" data-end=\"3715\">This is where the <strong data-start=\"3592\" data-end=\"3605\">Waves LV1<\/strong> system shines. I use a dedicated <strong data-start=\"3639\" data-end=\"3656\">matrix output<\/strong> for the livestream, fed by a custom aux mix that includes:<\/p><ul data-start=\"3717\" data-end=\"3832\"><li class=\"\" data-start=\"3717\" data-end=\"3771\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3719\" data-end=\"3771\">My full mix bus groups (drums, band, vocals, tracks)<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"3772\" data-end=\"3784\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3774\" data-end=\"3784\">FX returns<\/p><\/li><li class=\"\" data-start=\"3785\" data-end=\"3832\"><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3787\" data-end=\"3832\">Stereo audience mics (added last for realism)<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p class=\"\" data-start=\"3834\" data-end=\"4052\">Some elements (like talk mics and playback audio) bypass the groups and go directly to the livestream aux for better control of levels. For instance, spoken word always needs to be louder online than it is in the room.<\/p><hr class=\"\" data-start=\"4054\" data-end=\"4057\" \/><h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"4059\" data-end=\"4083\">Final Blend and Tips<\/h3><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4085\" data-end=\"4281\">Once I\u2019ve built the aux mix with post-fader sends and the right blend of instruments and vocals, I bring in the room mics. This creates a sense of space, realism, and participation for the viewer.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4283\" data-end=\"4401\">When it\u2019s all said and done, the goal is a <strong data-start=\"4326\" data-end=\"4357\">natural, musical livestream<\/strong> that reflects what\u2019s happening in the room.<\/p><p class=\"\" data-start=\"4403\" data-end=\"4490\">You don\u2019t need to build an entire broadcast mix suite to make this work.
